Hi Jim,

Thank you for posting the Last Hurrah photos.  I enjoyed seeing our classmates. I'm not sure I would have recognized many of them but then they probably wouldn't have recognized me either.  Last week the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge where I volunteer had a volunteer appreciation event.  I have attached a photo of me at that event as well as of my late wife Susan who also had been a volunteer there.  Please share these very recent photos.

Holiday greetings from Peter Nilsen

Last Sunday while in the San Francisco bay area for a family Thanksgiving celebration my wife Susan and I got together with Roger Huitric and his wife Karen for lunch. Another friend and fellow Loyola University alumnus and his wife, John and Connie Dalton, also joined us. Lunch was at Wente Winery restaurant in Livermore.

Roger, John and myself were in the same Loyola class and had been dormitory roommates at one time or another. The first attached photo is of Roger (with the beard) and me and the second photo is of Connie, John, Roger, Karen, Susan and Peter.

Roger and Karen are enjoying retirement in San Jose and Susan and I are enjoying retirement in Princeville on Kauai.

Susan and I continue to enjoy our retirement on Kauai.  We have been blessed with good health and we live a very active lifestyle.  

I have attached a photo of Susan and me taken in August 2012.  It was taken on board a river cruise ship while we were cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow.  We found the Russian people to be very friendly and the country to be beautfull and interesting.  I think Russia has more churches than any country we have ever visited.  What a change of outlook from when we were growing up and living during the cold war!

Happy Holidays

Our New House

Dear Friends and Loved Ones,

We hope this finds you healthy and happy. 2010 has been a year of change for us.

In the spring we sold our Palos Verdes house. It was with mixed emotions that we parted with it since it was the first house we owned, had lived there for over 30 years, and both our children had grown up there.

On the happy side, right after selling the house we bought a new house in Kauai. This house is a big step up for us since it is almost twice as big as our first Kauai house (which we now have leased out) and has both ocean and mountain views.

Our daughter Michelle graduated from design school in the spring and has gone into business with another interior designer doing interior design for both residences and businesses.

Christopher continues to do well at Ernst and Young where he has been promoted and given considerably more responsibility. However, the big change with Christopher is that he and Alexis are now engaged with a wedding scheduled for next August. Christopher really surprised Alexis by flying to Paris to propose to her while she was there on vacation with her mother. It was a complete surprise since Alexis had no idea he was coming.

By February Peter had recuperated sufficiently from previous September’s hip surgery to start outrigger canoe paddling and racing again. Unfortunately, as fall approached his recuperation had hit a plateau since the pain and limping weren’t improving anymore. So, in early November he had hip revision surgery in which a new socket and ball for the hip joint were implanted. His recuperation is going much better this time and four weeks after the surgery he has been able to walk a mile without a cane (sort of a cane mutiny).

Our only travel this last year was a February trip to Del Mar California where we had a delightful stay with Susan’s sister Chana and husband Frank. We had fun visiting a Temecula winery as well as touring the aircraft carrier Midway in San Diego harbor. We also enjoyed a delightful stay with Michelle and husband Brad in Oceanside California. They hosted a great dinner party for us that included Christopher, Alexis, and Peter’s brother Brian whom he had not seen in about 5 years.

Susan has continued to be very active volunteering at the Kilauea Point Wild Life Refuge. In between volunteering, selling and buying houses, moving, she till found time for her many projects as well as enjoying our beautiful beaches. Peter and two cohorts were named volunteers of the year for the lighthouse video Peter produced.

Once again, we hope that you will visit beautiful Kauai soon. We will enjoy seeing you and showing you around our beautiful island. Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and healthy New Year. We hope to see you in 2011.

Susan and I have been married for just over 43 years and have two children. Our daughter Michelle will be 37 next month. She is an interior designer and uses the professional name of Coco. Our son Christopher is 28 and is a mergers and acquisitions tax attorney.

I graduated from Loyola of Los Angeles in engineering and went on to UCLA for a graduate degree. My career was spent in the aerospace/defense industry working primarily in space and satellite programs. I retired in September 2006 from Northrop Grumman's Space and Technology division that was formerly TRW where I had managed satellite design and technology development projects.

Upon retirement in 2006 we moved from Palos Verdes to Princeville, Kauai where we had bought a house a few years earlier. I am very active in outrigger canoe racing on Kauai. In 2008 my over 60 years old mens 6 man outrigger canoe won the Kauai Island championship and went on to compete in the State championship in Honolulu (photo attached -I'm on the far left with the hat and sunglasses on). Prior to retirement, Susan and I were active sailors and skiers. We enjoy swimming at our many beautiful beaches all year round and volunteer at the Kilauea Point National Wild Life Refuge.

We hope that any classmates who visit Kauai will stop in to see us.
